The Portuguese Public Finance Council and the Faculty of Economics of the University of Algarve, with the support of the Algarve Hotels and Tourist Enterprises Association (AHETA) and the Regional Delegation of the Order of Economists, organized the conference "Tourism, Public Investment and Sustainable Development" on March 17th, in Faro.

As part of the conference cycle "The Portuguese Public Finance Council Invites to Debate," the event aimed to stimulate discussion on the impact of tourism on the national economy, public investment strategies, and sustainable development. Specifically, it sought to discuss how public investment, such as that carried out under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, could contribute to more sustainable and balanced economic growth in environmental, regional, and social terms.

The conference began at 2:30 PM at the Efigénio da Luz Rebelo Auditorium, Building 8, Gambelas Campus, in Faro, with speeches by Luís Serra Coelho (Director of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Algarve) and Nazaré da Costa Cabral (Chair of the Senior Board of the Portuguese Public Finance Council).

The event was divided into two parts. In the first panel, Pedro Pintassilgo, Full Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Director of the Economics Degree, presented the topic "The Importance of Tourism for the National Economy." The second topic, "Public Investment and the Tourism Sector in Particular," was addressed by Noémia Goulart, member of the Senior Board, and Rui Dias, analyst, both from the Portuguese Public Finance Council.

In the second panel, Cláudio Lima, President of the Regional Delegation of the Order of Economists, Carlos Lobo, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law of Lisbon and lawyer, Hélder Martins, President of the Algarve Hotels and Tourist Enterprises Association, and Paulo Almeida, Principal Coordinator Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, discussed "Sustainable Development and the Tourism Sector in the National Economy," moderated by Idálio Revez, journalist from Público newspaper.

This was the eighth conference in the cycle that began in 2020 and aimed to discuss some of the most relevant topics for the Portuguese economy and public finances.
