George Kopits in the OECD Annual Meeting in Jerusalem

George Kopits, non-Executive Member of the Portuguese Public Finance Council (CFP), was a guest speaker at the 6^th Annual Meeting of OECD Parliamentary Budget Officials and Independent Fiscal Institutions, hosted in Jerusalem by the Israeli Parliament (the Knesset) from 30^th March to 1^st April 2014. George Kopits presented the preliminary results of a paper on fiscal risks. The article surveys the state of the art of the economic literature on risk classification and measurement techniques. It is a useful guide for policy-makers and budget officials as it provides interesting suggestions on how to manage and minimise fiscal risks in practice. An analysis of questionnaire responses gives an idea of how the subject has been dealt with in recent years by budget authorities in OECD Member States. The final version of the paper, entitled “Coping with Fiscal Risk: Analysis and Practice”, was published by the OECD Journal on Budgeting (Volume 2014, Issue 1) and is available here.

On the occasion, George Kopits launched “Restoring Public Debt Sustainability”. This book is a comprehensive survey of recent independent fiscal institutions set to promote transparency in public finances through real-time monitoring of the soundness of budgetary policymaking.
