Rui Nuno Baleiras, the Executive Member of the Portuguese Public Finance Council (CFP), addressed today a few tens of final-year undergraduate students of Economics and Business Administration at the Autonomous University of Lisbon. He interacted with them on the interdependencies between the economy and public finances, stressing why the quality of institutions matters for both economic performance and fiscal sustainability. An institution focussed on the economic analysis of fiscal developments and independent from partisan and business interests can help a lot both citizens at large and the policy-makers in particular to improve the soundness of economic and fiscal policies. The experience of the CFP was presented in this context. A lively discussion with students closed the conference.
