Rui Nuno Baleiras, Executive Member of the Portuguese Public Finance Council, participated in the European Regional Science Association (ERSA) annual conference, the world’s largest gathering of Regional Science researchers, held in Lisbon from 25-28 August at ISEG – School of Economics and Management, under the topic World Renaissance: Changing roles for people and places.
The event included a session dedicated to the OECD’s project “How’s Life in Your Region” which is providing the international community of researchers, practitioners and policy-makers over the last ten years with an ever comprehensive toolkit of well-being indicators and economic analyses. The CFP’ Executive Member has worked on regional development economics and policy for many years both as an academic and a political decision-maker, and used this experience to talk about the usefulness of well-being indicators to better articulate place-based sectoral policies in unitary countries. Chaired by Duarte Rodrigues, Vice-President of the Portuguese Cohesion and Development Agency, the session entitled Measuring well-being in regions and cities: How can it improve the design of policies? was also addressed by Joaquim Oliveira Martins (Head of the OECD’s Regional Policy Division), Andrés Rodríguez-Pose (London School of Economics, United Kingdom), Philip McCann (University of Groningen, Netherlands) and José Alberto Rio Fernandes (Porto University, Portugal), followed by discussion with the public, on the 27th August.
